Katie Enders ~ Alexander Technique

What is the alexander technique?

The Alexander Technique is a subtle yet powerful method to improve the coordination and overall health of both body and mind. Through a series of body-awareness activities, Alexander Technique helps you to become aware of habitual behaviors and "use." By recognizing and stopping harmful habits of thought and movement, you learn how to get out of your own way and realize your natural potential.

F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) developed the technique when his own misuse interrupted his career as an actor and orator. He discovered that a fundamental relationship exists between the head, neck, and back which allows the body to function most efficiently. Initially, he thought he was the only one who interfered with this relationship, but in looking around him, he noticed that the majority of adults similarly interfered with their natural good use.

Alexander realized that habitual reactions to stressful situations particularly interfere with this head-neck-back relationship, often leading to impaired breathing and chronic pain. Alexander found that a wide variety of complaints could be alleviated and prevented through his Technique. The Alexander Technique has been called "the thinking person's answer to chronic pain."
